چکیده

Beyond reionization epoch cosmic hydrogen is neutral and can be directly observed through its 21 cm line signal. If dark matter (DM) decays or annihilates the corresponding energy input affects the hydrogen kinetic temperature and ionized fraction, and contributes to the Lyα background. The changes induced by these processes on the 21 cm signal can then be used to constrain the proposed DM candidates, among which we select the three most popular ones: (i) 25-keV decaying sterile neutrinos, (ii) 10-MeV decaying light dark matter (LDM) and (iii) 10-MeV annihilating LDM. Although we find that the DM effects are considerably smaller than found by previous studies (due to a more physical description of the energy transfer from DM to the gas), we conclude that combined observations of the 21 cm background and of its gradient should be able to put constrains at least on LDM candidates. In fact, LDM decays (annihilations) induce differential brightness temperature variations with respect to the non decaying/annihilating DM case up to ∆δTb = 8 (22) mK at about 50 (15) MHz. In principle this signal could be detected both by current single dish radio telescopes and future facilities as LOFAR; however, this assumes that ionospheric, interference and foreground issues can be properly taken care of.

Insights on Dark Matter from Hydrogen during Cosmic Dawn

The origin and composition of the cosmological dark matter remain a mystery. However, upcoming 21-cm measurements during cosmic dawn, the period of the first stellar formation, can provide new clues on the nature of dark matter. During this era, the baryon-dark matter fluid is the slowest it will ever be, making it ideal to search for dark matter elastically scattering with baryons through mass...

On the Direct Detectability of the Cosmic Dark Ages: 21-cm Emission from Minihalos

In the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) theory of structure formation, virialized minihalos (with Tvir . 10 4 K) form in abundance at high redshift (z > 6), during the cosmic “dark ages.” The hydrogen in these minihalos, the first nonlinear baryonic structures to form in the universe, is mostly neutral and sufficiently hot and dense to emit strongly at the 21-cm line. We calculate the emission f...

Sterile Neutrinos in the Milky Way: Observational Constraints

We consider the possibility of constraining decaying dark matter by looking out through the Milky Way halo. Specifically we use Chandra blank sky observations to constrain the parameter space of sterile neutrinos. We find that a broad band in parameter space is still open, leaving the sterile neutrino as an excellent dark matter candidate. Subject headings: dark matter — elementary particles — ...

Swift XRT Observations of the Possible Dark Galaxy VIRGOHI 21

Swift XRT observations of the Hi line source VIRGOHI 21 were performed on April 22 and April 26, 2008 for a total exposure time of 9.2 ks. This is the first pointed X-ray observation of VIRGOHI 21, a putative dark galaxy in the Virgo cluster, and no photons were detected from this source. The non-detection of extended X-ray emission within the angular extent of the Hi source corresponds to a 99...
